Mike Russell, RVT

Hi, I’m Mike.

I was born in Utah and grew up in Southern California. Besides raising and training my own pets over the years, I started my animal health career at a greyhound rescue and blood bank called Hemopet from 1997-1999. I have fond memories of working with over 100 greyhounds in my two years of service.

I decided to become a veterinary technician and joined a local Veterinary Hospital in June of 1999. In 2001 I became lead technician and remained so until my departure in 2007. In 2006

I graduated top of my class from Professional Veterinary Assistant School. After having passed the California state board exam, I am now licensed and registered as a veterinary technician. I look forward to sharing my experience and knowledge with the community through my services at Mike’s Pet Care.

What is a RVT?

RVT, or Registered Veterinary Technician, is an individual that has passed a State Veterinary Board examination after obtaining a 2 or 4 year college degree in animal health technology. In California, veterinary assistants who have developed their skills for three or more years can get education in animal health care on a fast track that will allow them to become licensed without a degree. This is known as the alternate route. An RVT plays an important role on the veterinary team. Job responsibilities range from technical duties such as nursing care, collection and processing of lab samples, placing catheters, induction and monitoring anesthesia, dentistry, and radiography, to managerial duties such as ordering and inventory, personnel management, record keeping and client education. In California, RVT's are certified and held accountable under the Veterinary Medical Board and the Registered Veterinary Technician Committee.
